Why there are no ab days (and abs still show up)

Look through the plan and there is no ab day. There's a core block, a handful of times a week, and it's short. If your goal is a visible midsection this looks like an oversight.

It isn't. Crunches are a poor tool for the job people buy them for, and the reason is a piece of exercise science that has been settled for a long time.

What the evidence says about spot reduction

The clean way to test this is to train one limb and leave the other alone, then measure fat on both. Researchers have run versions of that experiment — weeks of high-volume work on a single arm or a single leg — and the pattern is consistent: fat comes off across the body rather than preferentially from the area that did the work.

The mechanism makes sense once you see it. Fat isn't burned where it sits. It's released into circulation from stores all over the body and used wherever energy is being spent, which on a set of crunches is mostly not your abdomen. The muscle underneath gets stronger. The layer above it is unaffected by which muscle you chose.

What actually reveals a midsection

Total body fat coming down. That's it, and it's driven by the calorie target on your dashboard plus the training and steps that sit alongside it. There is no local shortcut, which is genuinely good news — it means every compliant day is working on your midsection whether or not the session included a single crunch.

Where fat leaves first is largely out of your hands. Distribution is set by genetics, sex and hormones, and for a lot of people the abdomen is one of the last places to give it up. That's not a training error and no exercise selection changes it. The order is fixed; the total is yours.

The last layer is water, not fat. Sodium, carbohydrate and cycle-related fluid shifts can obscure definition that's already there, which is why a midsection can look different on two mornings a week apart with no change in body composition at all.

  • Direct ab work burns very few calories — it isn't a meaningful part of the energy equation
  • A large compound lift moves far more total energy than any isolation ab movement
  • Water retention hides definition for days at a time, independent of fat
  • Standing posture and trunk stiffness change how a midsection looks before body fat does
You cannot choose where the fat leaves from. You can only decide how much of it leaves.

So what is the core block for

Three things, none of them fat loss. The first is trunk stiffness under load. A braced midsection is what lets you squat, hinge and press without the spine paying for it, and that transfers directly to the compound lifts that do carry the training stimulus.

The second is muscle. At any given level of body fat, a thicker, better-developed abdominal wall is more visible than a thin one. The core block builds something to see; the deficit uncovers it. Both halves are required and they're doing different jobs.

The third is that it's short and it's placed where it costs you nothing. A few minutes at the end of a session doesn't compete with the lifting for recovery, which is exactly why the plan doesn't hand it a whole day it hasn't earned.

Look at what the block contains and the logic is visible. Anti-extension and anti-rotation work — planks, dead bugs, carries — trains the trunk to resist movement, which is what it does under a loaded bar. High-rep crunching trains the trunk to produce movement against almost no resistance, which is the one job it never has to do in the rest of the plan.

The exercises that look like ab days and aren't

Waist trainers, sweat belts and heated wraps all trade on the same misunderstanding. What they produce is local fluid loss, which returns as soon as you drink, and none of them touch the fat underneath. The same goes for any device sold on the promise of targeting one area.

Very high-rep ab circuits are a gentler version of the same error. They're not harmful, they just cost thirty minutes and burn less energy than a brisk walk of the same length would, while doing considerably less for the trunk than a heavy carry does.

What to do with the time you're not spending on crunches

Put it into the things that do move the number. Hit the calorie and protein targets, get the prescribed session finished, and take the step target seriously — walking is the highest-volume energy expenditure available to you that doesn't cost recovery.

And be patient about the specific area. It's usually the last thing to change, it changes late in a cut, and thirty days is a start rather than a finish for most people. If a specific body area is driving how you feel about yourself in a way that's hard to shake, that's worth talking to someone about — it responds to conversation better than it responds to more crunches.
